Why You're Not Losing Weight After Bariatric Surgery: The Truth About Protein Shakes and Food Quality
Jun 03, 2025

Bariatric surgery is a powerful tool, but it isn’t a magic fix. Many patients find themselves frustrated when the scale stops moving months after surgery. If you’ve hit a weight loss stall, you’re not alone—and according to bariatric coach and weight loss surgery veteran Shenelle Coplien, the answer may be hiding in plain sight: what you’re eating and whether you’re tracking it.
In her latest TikTok video, Shenelle responds to a common struggle—getting stuck long after surgery. One woman plateaued at 187 pounds after starting at 257. Shenelle’s advice? It’s all about going back to basics: tracking your food and examining the quality of what’s going into your body.
The Food Tracking Fix
Tracking isn’t just about counting calories or hitting macros. Shenelle explains that obesity is more complex than just calories in and calories out. The real culprit often lies in ultra-processed foods, sugary snacks, and yes—even the “healthy” bariatric staples like protein bars and shakes.
She notes that many people continue relying on protein shakes and bars more than six months post-op. While convenient, these foods can keep inflammation high and stall your progress. Shenelle often encourages clients to eliminate these processed items for two weeks and watch the scale move again—not because of fewer calories, but because of cleaner food.
“If you’re tracking, I want to know what that food actually looks like,” says Shenelle. “Are there protein shakes in it? Are you relying on bars and artificial sweeteners?”
The Emotional Side of Eating
For many, food isn’t just nutrition—it’s emotional. Shenelle opens up about her own journey and how she had to face the addictive nature of food after surgery. She gave up fast food, sugar, and artificial sweeteners entirely—not just for her weight, but for her mental clarity and emotional balance.
“I’m very particular about what I eat today,” she explains. “Because my metabolism can’t handle it, and I become obsessive if I go back to eating those things.”
This is a common issue in the bariatric community: the psychological connection to food doesn’t disappear after surgery. That’s why healing your relationship with food is just as important as meal plans and portion sizes.
