Is Cottage Cheese Sabotaging Your Bariatric Progress? What to Look For Before You Buy
May 08, 2025

You’d think cottage cheese would be a safe post-surgery staple—high in protein, simple ingredients, and easy to digest, right?
Wrong.
Even foods marketed as “clean” can contain ingredients that work against your weight loss goals. In this post, Shenelle Coplien, founder of The Rewrite Lifestyle Center, breaks down why not all cottage cheese is created equal—and how one common additive might be sabotaging your success after bariatric surgery.
When “Healthy” Foods Aren’t Helping
Cottage cheese is often recommended in post-op bariatric diets for its high protein and soft texture. But some brands sneak in ingredients that could spike your blood sugar and disrupt your gut—especially dangerous if you’re healing from surgery, managing insulin resistance, or have a history of Type 2 diabetes.
A common culprit? Maltodextrin.
“Good & Gather’s full-fat cottage cheese from Target includes maltodextrin, and that’s a red flag,” says Shenelle.
Maltodextrin isn’t just a cheap filler. It has a glycemic index of 85–105, meaning it can spike your blood sugar faster than table sugar (USDA Glycemic Index Studies).
The Science: Why Maltodextrin Is a Problem
Research published in Frontiers in Microbiology (2015) shows that maltodextrin disrupts gut microbiota and increases inflammation—two major concerns for bariatric patients looking to heal their metabolism and support digestive health.
“I go out of my way to avoid maltodextrin—even in so-called healthy foods—because I’m playing the long game with my health,” Shenelle explains.
Better Cottage Cheese Choices for Bariatric Patients
When choosing cottage cheese post-surgery, keep it simple. Look for:
-
Minimal ingredients (think: milk, cream, salt, cultures)
-
No additives like maltodextrin, carrageenan, or thickeners
Shenelle recommends brands like Daisy and Good Culture for their clean ingredients and consistent quality.
Label Reading 101: What to Watch For
Start checking the back of every label. Ask yourself:
-
Would I use these ingredients at home?
-
Can I recognize each one?
-
Does it spike blood sugar or affect digestion?
Most people wouldn’t add maltodextrin or carrageenan to their homemade food—so why accept it from a store-bought brand?
