5 Things I Won’t Eat After Bariatric Surgery (and What I Eat Instead)
Dec 02, 2024
Healthy food choices, including fruits and vegetables, compared to avoided processed snacks after bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery was a life-changing experience that reshaped how I approach food. I’ve learned to make mindful choices, prioritizing foods that fuel and nourish my body while steering clear of those that hinder my progress or health. Here are five ingredients I avoid and the healthier options I’ve embraced instead.

1️⃣ Maltodextrin

Why I avoid it:
Maltodextrin is a sneaky additive often found in processed foods and drinks. It spikes blood sugar, triggers cravings, and provides no real nutritional value.

What I eat instead:
I stick to naturally flavored drinks, like water infused with lemon, mint, or berries, and enjoy plain herbal teas for a refreshing alternative.

2️⃣ Fructose (Added, Not Natural)

Why I avoid it:
Added fructose is nothing more than empty sugar that my body doesn’t need. It can derail my focus on nutrient-rich foods.

What I eat instead:
I satisfy my sweet tooth with fresh fruits such as berries, apples, or oranges. These natural options provide fiber, vitamins, and a refreshing taste.

3️⃣ Carrageenan

Why I avoid it:
Carrageenan, a thickener commonly found in plant-based milks, can cause inflammation and digestive discomfort.

What I eat instead:
I check labels carefully and opt for carrageenan-free products like MALK or Elmhurst almond or oat milk. Simple, clean options work best for me.

4️⃣ Erythritol

Why I avoid it:
This artificial sweetener can disrupt gut health, cause bloating, and even intensify cravings.

What I eat instead:
When I need a touch of sweetness, I choose raw honey or pure maple syrup sparingly. Most of the time, I rely on whole fruits or naturally sweet foods.

5️⃣ Ultra-Processed Slider Foods

Why I avoid it:
Items like chips, crackers, and cookies lack nutritional value and don’t keep me full, often leading to unnecessary calorie intake.

What I eat instead:
I enjoy crunchy veggies like cucumbers, bell peppers, or celery paired with hummus or guacamole. For a more substantial snack, I prepare homemade protein bites with nuts and seeds.

The Bottom Line

Bariatric surgery gave me a second chance at health, and I’ve learned to fuel my body with foods that help me feel strong, energized, and in control.
