Breaking Through Weight Loss Stalls After Bariatric Surgery
Jan 17, 2025

🚨 Feeling Stuck? Let’s Break It Down! 🚨
If you’ve recently undergone weight loss surgery and the scale has hit a standstill, don’t panic. Stalls are a normal part of the journey. Let’s talk about what’s happening inside your body and how you can keep moving forward.
The Infamous Three-Week Stall
Despite its name, the three-week stall doesn’t always strike at exactly three weeks post-op. It can happen anytime between two to eight weeks and may last a couple of weeks.
Here’s what’s happening:
- The Glycogen Effect:
- In the first few weeks post-surgery, your body burns through its glycogen stores for energy.
- Glycogen is stored in your liver and muscles, and for every gram of glycogen, your body retains about 3 grams of water.
- As glycogen depletes, that water weight drops, and the scale moves fast at first.
- Refilling the Bank:
- After this initial drop, your body starts replenishing glycogen stores, holding onto more water.
- Fat loss is still happening, but the scale might not reflect it yet.
The Three-Month Slowdown
Around the three-month mark, the rapid weight loss phase slows, and your body begins to pass the baton to you. This is where your habits play a key role in maintaining momentum.
Ask yourself:
✔️ Are you eating whole, nutrient-dense foods?
✔️ Are you tracking your intake to ensure you’re staying on track?
✔️ Are you prioritizing regular movement and activity?
When to Troubleshoot
If the scale hasn’t budged for over four weeks, it’s time to dig a little deeper:
💡 Cut out protein products—they might not be doing as much good as you think.
💡 Track your food intake—small extras can sneak in unnoticed.
💡 Ditch ultra-processed foods—these can hinder your progress.
You’re Not Alone
Feeling stuck doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it’s just a part of the process. Remember, the scale may pause, but your progress hasn’t.
