Straw or No Straw? The Truth About Drinking After Weight Loss Surgery
Feb 13, 2025

One of the most common debates in the bariatric community is whether or not you can use a straw after weight loss surgery. It’s a question that sparks a lot of discussion, and honestly, there’s a bit of a myth surrounding it.
The Myth: No More Straws—Ever
If you’ve been told you can never drink from a straw again after weight loss surgery, let’s clear the air. In the beginning, your surgeon likely advised against using a straw—and they were absolutely right. The reason? Drinking too quickly can cause discomfort, and using a straw early on might lead to swallowing excess air, which can be painful.
The Reality: Straws Are Totally Fine (Eventually)
As you progress in your post-surgery journey, straws become much less of an issue. Your body will adapt, and while you might not be able to chug drinks the way you used to, sipping from a straw is completely doable. Some people, even years after surgery, say they still can’t chug water, while others have no problem. It really depends on the individual.
Personally, I still take it slow, but I don’t mind—it’s just part of my lifestyle now. Since giving up alcohol, I’ve embraced sipping, and it doesn’t bother me at all.
The Takeaway
If you’re past the initial healing phase and want to use a straw, go for it! Just listen to your body, sip mindfully, and enjoy your hydration however it works best for you.
So yes, girl—go grab your Stanley Cup and sip away!
