Road Trip After Bariatric Surgery? Here’s How I Ate Clean and Stayed Satisfied
Traveling after bariatric surgery doesn’t have to derail your progress. In fact, with some smart planning and simple packing, you can stay aligned with your nutrition goals—even on long drives. I'm Shenelle, and I’m three years post-op gastric sleeve. This post marks my three-year anniversary since I started my pre-op diet. And yes, that also means it’s been three full years without fast food.
So what do I eat when I travel? I pack everything. Here’s how I planned our four-hour drive to Long Beach—without stopping for drive-thru meals.
What I Packed for the Road
✅ Toasted Carb Balance Sandwiches – Reserved for travel days, I use low-carb bread that only works well when toasted. I prepped roast beef and cheese sandwiches as well as peanut butter and jelly (using a chia seed jam, not the sugary store-bought kind).
✅ Simple Mills Crackers – A clean, crunchy option that pairs well with other snacks.
✅ Fruit On-Hand – I packed bananas, even though they weren’t ripe yet, knowing they'd be ready by our return trip.
✅ Dried Fruit (No Sugar Added) – Tomatoes that taste like candy. Seriously. I picked these up from Whole Foods.
✅ Snap Peas – For a refreshing, fiber-rich crunch.
✅ Clean Ingredient Bar – My go-to bar contains organic almonds, dates, maple syrup, cacao nibs, and sea salt. It’s not a protein bar—more of a clean carb boost.
✅ Dark Chocolate Treat – Just a little something for fun. One small bar for us to share.
These snacks keep me full, energized, and satisfied without relying on fast food or ultra-processed options.
Why This Matters After Bariatric Surgery
Post-surgery, what you eat matters just as much as how much. Packaged protein bars and shakes are often loaded with artificial sweeteners that can reignite cravings. Choosing whole foods like those I packed on this trip helps regulate your reward system and reduce food noise.
