In 2020, I embarked on a journey that forever changed my life. It was the beginning of my recovery from alcohol and drugs, a decision that was both challenging and transformative. In 2022, I took a further step toward total health by undergoing weight loss surgery, but I quickly learned that the procedure alone wasn’t the answer. The real work lay in understanding my relationship with food. I began to see that, just as I had struggled with substances, I also had an unhealthy connection with food—another addiction that needed attention and care.
Recognizing Food as More Than Fuel
Food was more than just sustenance for me. It had become a coping mechanism, a way to soothe, distract, or escape. As I had done in my substance recovery, I needed to look at my eating habits with the same honesty and determination. Identifying these patterns helped me start the difficult but essential work of changing my approach to food.
