3 Truths You Must Know Before Bariatric Surgery: Real Talk from a Weight Loss Coach
May 27, 2025

If you’re thinking about weight loss surgery—or you’re already post-op and feeling stuck in sugar spirals, shame, or confusion—this is your wake-up call.
As someone who lost 120 pounds through gastric sleeve surgery and now coaches bariatric patients full-time, I need to say it loud:
Weight loss surgery is a tool, not a cure.
If no one told you that food addiction is a disease, not a willpower issue… you were set up to struggle.
Let’s talk about what you really need to know before—and after—bariatric surgery.
1. Obesity Is a Disease—Not a Personal Failure
Most people think they became obese because they “just ate too much and didn’t exercise.”
That’s not just incorrect—it’s dangerous thinking.
Obesity was officially recognized as a chronic disease in 2013, and it’s influenced by far more than calories. We’re talking genetics, hormones, trauma, stress, mental health, environment, and yes—food addiction.
Think of it this way: if you were newly diagnosed with diabetes, you’d research everything about it. Do the same for obesity. Learn what you’re really fighting.

2. Your Social Life Doesn’t Change—But Your Coping Strategies Must
After surgery, your body may shrink, but the emotional and social triggers don’t disappear.
Vacations, birthdays, holidays, and stressful days at work will still happen. If you don’t learn how to cope differently, they’ll pull you right back into emotional eating or binge cycles—even if your stomach is smaller.
This is why so many people struggle with regain after their honeymoon period ends. Surgery doesn’t fix how we deal with life. You have to actively rewrite your relationship with food and feelings.

3. There’s No “One Right Way” After Surgery—Find Your People
You’ll see people eating fast food post-op, drinking only protein shakes, or living off sugar-free snacks. Some of it might work short-term. Some of it may be masking relapse.
You need to find what really works for your mind, your metabolism, and your mental health.
If you're saying:
-
“I emotionally eat.”
-
“I binge when I’m stressed.”
-
“I’m stuck in a sugar spiral even after surgery.”
You're not broken.
You just haven't found your people.
This community was built for exactly that reason. We talk about the real stuff: the cravings, the shame, the lies we were told about “just eat less,” and how to actually build freedom from food—not dependency on diet products.
