Why I Don’t Eat Chick-fil-A After Bariatric Surgery: Understanding My Food Addiction

 I Don’t Eat Chick-fil-A—Not Because I Can’t, But Because I Finally Get It

After losing 120 pounds post-bariatric surgery, one question keeps coming up:
“But what about Chick-fil-A?”

Here’s my answer: I don’t eat Chick-fil-A—not because I’m better than anyone else, but because I finally understand what it was doing to my body and brain. This isn’t about shame or superiority. It’s about survival.

More Than Just Maltodextrin

One of the biggest red flags in Chick-fil-A meals is maltodextrin—a common food additive with a dangerously high glycemic index. It’s higher than table sugar (over 100 vs. sugar’s 60s), which means it spikes blood sugar levels quickly and sharply.

If you’ve had weight loss surgery due to pre-diabetes, type 2 diabetes, or insulin resistance, that spike can lead to cravings, poor food choices, and long-term setbacks.

Here’s where you’ll find maltodextrin in Chick-fil-A products:

  • Grilled chicken sandwiches (yes, even the bun)

  • Chicken strips and spicy filets

  • Seasonings on chicken

  • Mac and cheese

  • Ranch dressing

It’s not just Chick-fil-A either—maltodextrin is also found in bariatric shakes, protein bars, and “skinny” syrups marketed to post-op patients.

But This Isn’t Just About Ingredients

This goes deeper than sugar spikes.

For me, fast food wasn’t a treat—it was a coping mechanism. A shortcut. A way to bypass a disease that doesn’t respond to quick fixes.

I don’t metabolize food like other people do. Cheap, hyper-palatable meals light up my brain like a slot machine. And when I was deep in food addiction, that drive-thru wasn’t just convenient—it was my dealer.

This is what no one tells you: post-op success isn’t just about portion control. It’s about understanding your relationship with food and rewiring how you respond to stress, time pressure, and emotion.

The Illusion of Convenience

Before surgery, I convinced myself I didn’t have time to eat properly. Chick-fil-A was quick, tasty, and everywhere.

But after surgery, I had to make a different choice. I now leave the house with snack packs. I road-trip with a cooler. I prioritize my health—because I finally value it.

You can learn how to prep, plan, and thrive after surgery too. The Rewrite Lifestyle Center exists to help bariatric patients rewrite the way they eat, think, and live.

Learn to Read Between the Lines (and the Labels)

Many “healthy” or “low-cal” products contain ingredients that sabotage bariatric progress. Whether it's maltodextrin, artificial sweeteners, or ultra-processed fillers, you must be your own advocate.

Start by reading reputable sources like the ASMBS guide on post-bariatric nutrition, and join a community that supports real change—not just restriction.

This Isn’t About Being Better—It’s About Being Honest

Fast food didn’t make me a bad person. But pretending I could keep eating it “in moderation” nearly cost me everything.

Now, I make different choices. Not because I can’t have fast food—but because I understand what it does to me.
